The instant print, in its own proportions

What makes an instant print recognisable is not the white — it is the proportion: a narrow, even margin on three sides and a deep one at the bottom, around a picture of a fixed shape. This page opens the Instant print style with that shape already set. Each format below uses the card and picture-area sizes published for that film type, turned into margins as a share of the picture, so the card comes out in proportion at any resolution.

Square instant
a 79 × 79 mm picture area on an 88 × 107 mm card
Wide instant
a 99 × 62 mm picture area on a 108 × 86 mm card
Mini instant
a 46 × 62 mm picture area on a 54 × 86 mm card

The opening is fixed, so the photo is cropped to it — visibly, on the light table, never silently. Picture position moves the photo inside the opening. If you would rather keep the whole photo, choose Free: the same style then wraps the picture as it is, with its deep bottom margin set by the Bottom margin slider.

Square instant format — drawn by this site's renderer: a 1200 × 900 picture becomes 1066 × 1283.

How to make one

  1. 1Open a photograph. It is set in a square instant card.
  2. 2Choose Square, Wide or Mini under Instant format, and slide Picture position until the right part shows.
  3. 3Pick the card colour, and add a paper texture or a soft shadow under Finish.
  4. 4Save as PNG or JPG at full size. The file name ends in -instant-print.

Limits worth seeing before export

  • A fixed opening means a crop. A portrait in the square format loses some of its top and bottom; Picture position chooses which part goes.
  • The proportions follow published card and picture sizes; the split between the top and bottom margins is approximate.

Questions about the rendered frame

Is this a real Polaroid?
No. It is an instant-print style frame drawn around your photo. Polaroid is a trademark of its owner, and this site is not affiliated with it; the page is called what people search for. The controls use generic names — square, wide and mini instant.
Why is part of my photo missing?
An instant print has a fixed opening — square, wide or mini — so a photo of a different shape has to be cropped to it. The crop is shown on the light table, and Picture position slides the photo to choose what shows. Choose Free under Instant format to keep the whole photo with the same deep bottom margin instead.
Can I write on the bottom?
Not in this version: the deep bottom margin is drawn blank, the way an unwritten print comes out of the camera. Print it and write on the paper, or add text in another program after saving.
Can the frame be black or another colour?
Yes. The card colour is a normal colour well under Colour, so white, cream, black or a colour taken from the photo all work. Paper and grain textures under Finish give the card a little surface.
